Heroes from East Sussex community radio stations have been recognised for their efforts throughout the pandemic when Wealden MP Nus Ghani presented awards to volunteers at Uckfield FM and Hailsham FM.

Christine Skinner is an invaluable member of the Uckfield FM team, and has kept listeners updated with information and Government advice, broadcasting from her own home during the Breakfast show.

Since the beginning of the coronavirus crisis, the radio station has become an even more important hub for residents of Uckfield and surrounding villages in the Wealden District in East Sussex to be kept informed.

Christine volunteered to daily source, collate and write a comprehensive guide which included all relevant information and provided updated information for the presenters to read throughout the day and is committed to carrying out this task for as long as necessary.

Stephen Dann volunteers as a presenter of various shows at Hailsham FM and has been going to the studio every day throughout the pandemic, to ensure that local residents could reach the team and share updates.

He has been keeping people informed about the latest guidelines and advice on how to stay safe, as well as sharing information and spreading the details of local volunteer groups and support networks, such as the Hailsham Crisis Support.

Stephen himself has picked up on requests for support from local residents and has devoted his free time to supporting the vulnerable in the community, by taking people to hospitals and medical appointments, and by delivering food to them.

Nus Ghani said: “Our community radio stations such as Uckfield FM and Hailsham FM are real lifelines to many constituents and I cannot thank them enough for all they have been doing during the Coronavirus pandemic.

"They are outstanding community assets run by local people for local people, and they have played a vital role during the crisis.

"The work and success of both radio stations depends on a fantastic team of volunteers who dedicate their time to ensuring that their listeners have the most up to date information and know whom to contact for support.

"Christine and Stephen are two exceptional volunteers and greatly valued by their teams and community. Many thanks for your efforts and dedication.”
