Nusrat Ghani, MP for Wealden, has chaired a parliamentary debate focusing on British meat and milk farming, and highlighting the importance of buying local to reduce carbon emissions and support British farmers.
British meat and dairy are produced to one of the highest welfare and environmental standards in the world and are a great asset to the country. Wealden countryside is home to many exceptional family farms that play a key role in producing some of the best British products enjoyed in the UK as well as overseas.
Nusrat holds regular meetings with the National Farmers Union representatives and was previously the Parliamentary Representative for the Conservative Rural Affairs Group.
Nusrat Ghani said: βIt is a great honour to be appointed by the Speaker and to play a key part in legislating for our country. I was delighted to chair this important debate which is close to our hearts in Wealden. Our local farmers are entrepreneurs on whom we depend and it is our responsibility to fight for their interests and to behave in a way that makes their businesses sustainable β buy local products. Agriculture plays a critical role in reaching our net zero targets. Buying local, from environmentally responsible sources, will reduce the environmental footprint as well as boost UK economy.β
