Wealden District Council has been awarded more than £300,000 as part of the Government’s Safer Streets initiative.

Wealden is the only district council to have made a successful bid for this funding. The £309,453 will be invested into preventing crime in the area. The funding will secure further crime-preventative measures such as CCTV cameras as well as education and information projects and a neighbourhood watch scheme for Hailsham.

Last year, the Safer Streets Fund provided nearly £900,000 to the Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner to help tackle anti-social behaviour, theft and burglary in parts of East Sussex. This year, forty areas across England and Wales have been awarded a total of £18.4 million to crack down on neighbourhood crimes as part of round two, and the third round of the Safer Streets Fund will be providing a further fund of £25 million for 2021/22.

Nus Ghani MP said: “This is fantastic news and I am delighted that Wealden District Council secured this key bid. We are extremely lucky that Wealden continues to remain a safe place to live with consistently low levels of crime. However, rare incidents of crime and burglaries do occur and I am pleased that this funding will provide Hailsham with the resources they need to tackle crime and ensure that people continue to feel safe in their homes and in their communities. I meet regularly with constituents who have fallen victims to crime, particularly burglaries, and I am pleased that I can now give them further assurances that Wealden continues to be well equipped to tackle crime.”
