Crowborough Birthing Unit

Nusrat Ghani, MP for Wealden, has visited the Birthing Centre at the War Memorial Hospital in Crowborough to meet the team of midwifes and celebrate its reopening.

Crowborough Birthing Centre is run by a dedicated team of experienced midwives, offering complete antenatal care, tests, and postnatal care, as well as many birth choices. The Centre has two birthing rooms with birthing pools available, and three postnatal rooms, some with double beds, so that partners can also stay.

Births were temporarily suspended at the Centre in December 2020 due to the pandemic, and Nusrat has been campaigning for its reopening alongside The Friends of Crowborough Hospital. It has finally reopened in April, re-establishing a safe out of hospital birth provision for women expecting a low-risk labour.

Mums and their partners are welcome to book a tour of the unit by contacting the Birthing Centre on 01892 654080.

Nusrat Ghani said: “I am delighted that following my repeated representations to the Trust and collaboration with The Friends of Crowborough Hospital, this much valued, vital service for parents-to-be in Wealden and from across Kent and East Sussex has reopened. Thanks to the superb work and dedication of the midwifes and medical staff, the Unit continues to provide first class care and support for mums and families in a homely setting. The Birthing Unit is a clear example of how local community facilities can work and I will continue to work with The Friends of Crowborough Hospital to ensure that the Birthing Unit remains open and receives the support it needs.”
