Our MP, Nusrat Ghani, has said she is “incredibly proud” Wealden is leading the way in supporting Ukrainians fleeing the war.

According to the latest figures over 1,000 Ukrainian’s have now settled in East Sussex since the launch of the Homes for Ukraine scheme in March, with nearly 500 in Wealden.

Nusrat Ghani MP said:

I am incredibly proud that Wealden is leading the way in providing support in East Sussex, hosting the most arrivals in the county. I was pleased to meet some of the families at the fantastic Support Hub in Mayfield and I continue to put pressure on the Home Office to ensure that those who have not yet reached Wealden can do so as soon as possible. I also continue to make representations to my Ministerial colleagues to ensure that Wealden District Council and East Sussex County Council have the appropriate additional resources they need.

At the end of June 600 host families across the East Sussex have welcomed 1,095 Ukrainians fleeing the war in Ukraine into their homes, with 469 arrivals in Wealden, which is twice as many as any other constituency in the county.

The figures suggest that more than 1,583 Ukrainians are expected to come to East Sussex in total, meaning the county has received over 69% of our number of anticipated arrivals. More than 317 school places have been allocated to Ukrainian children to date.

On Friday (15th July), East Sussex County Council agreed to release over 1⁄2 million pounds of Government funding to district and borough councils to support Ukrainian refugees. So far, the district and borough councils have been claiming back the cost from the County Council..

Of the 1,095 refugees in east Sussex 456 were in Wealden, 209 in Rother, 208 in Lewes, 108 in Eastbourne and 83 in Hastings.

The East Sussex County Council has a dedicated website for Ukrainian guests and hosts. For any questions, hosts and guests can contact the Council by email [email protected] or telephone helpline 01323 724748.
