Two year ten students from Hailsham Community College were guests of Wealden MP Nusrat Ghani on a visit to Westminster for a first-hand experience of UK democracy.
In March this year Nusrat hosted the annual Hailsham Community College careers fair which was attended by local businesses, apprenticeship providers, further education institutes, emergency services and charities. All presented the various career paths available in a multitude of different disciplines to students.
As part of the fair, students took part in Nusrat’s competition to win a visit to Westminster by sharing their policy suggestions. Morgan Barnard and Alanna Cox, both from year ten, suggesting a policy to allow more Ukrainian citizens to come to the UK, and were chosen as the winning entry.
Since March, this has now been achieved through the Homes for Ukraine scheme, bringing over 1,000 Ukrainian arrivals to East Sussex, of which nearly 500 came to Wealden.
During their time in Westminster, Morgan and Alanna, accompanied by the Hailsham Community College's careers advisor Jennie Cole, explored Westminster Hall and the House of Lords chamber, and witnessed live proceedings in the House of Commons chamber.
Nusrat Ghani said: “It was a pleasure to host Morgan and Alanna in Parliament for a first-hand experience of the debates taking place in the Commons chamber. I hope that they enjoyed their visit, especially during this busy time when Westminster is buzzing with the excitement of the leadership contest.
"Every year, I am proud to be championing the Hailsham Community College fair, exhibiting local work opportunities and inspiring future career choices. It is a fantastic event for our young students and I look forward to hosting the next one in March 2023.”
