Uckfield News

Increases in Covid-19 cases in the Uckfield area come at a time when residents are reporting difficulties in getting a test locally.

One person who contacted this website was referred to a testing centre at Heathrow, a round trip of about 120 miles.

The long journey was suggested by the booking website at a time when a mobile testing station was established in the town.

The difficulties in getting a test were raised by Wealden MP, Nus Ghani.

She said she was pushing for mobile sites across Wealden “so we can ensure than anyone who needs a Covid test can access one quickly and easily”.

In the the House of Commons she said: “In rural constituencies like mine, mobile testing units such as the one in Uckfield are key, but there seems to be a glitch in the system.

Fix the Covid testing glitch:

“A constituent called Colin, who lives in the village of Fletching, was directed miles away when he could have been directed to the local mobile unit.”

She asked the Secretary of State for Health, Matt Hancock, to fix the “glitch”.

He replied: “With pleasure.”

Posting on social media, town councillor Duncan Bennett – a former deputy town mayor – commenting on the latest national figures for cases and deaths said:

“Yet, you can’t get a test for love nor money in Sussex at the moment…it’s a shambles.”

Darrell Gale, East Sussex Director of Public Health, said the East Sussex rate of cases was increasing but “still tracking below the England weekly rate”.
