"They have been fantastic throughout the pandemic and stepped up to support the NHS and utilise their facilities to the maximum."

Crowborough's Horder Centre, under the leadership of CEO Richard Tyler, has been presented with a Wealden Hero Award by MP Nusrat Ghani. The award was made to mark their contribution to NHS services during the pandemic.

The Horder Centre is a specialist hospital focusing on orthopaedic surgery and musculoskeletal treatment and offers a wide range of services including knee replacement, shoulder replacement, carpal tunnel release, hip replacement and physiotherapy to both NHS and private patients.

When elective procedures stopped in the wake of the pandemic last year, the Horder Centre provided support to the NHS and used their facilities to increase capacity for traditional services. Their everyday work was changed from joint replacement surgery, to dealing with emergency orthopaedic patients taken from NHS hospitals at Pembury and the Queen Victoria Hospital at East Grinstead, thus relieving pressure on the NHS increasing its capacity to deal with the expected influx of patients suffering from Covid-19.

Nusrat Ghani said: “I’m pleased to award the Horder Centre and its CEO Richard Tyler with the Wealden Hero Award for their fantastic service. The Horder Centre are experts in knee and hip replacements and they’re an excellent service and incredibly useful to residents in Crowborough, Wealden and the wider area of Kent and East Sussex.

"They have been fantastic throughout the pandemic and stepped up to support the NHS and utilise their facilities to the maximum. Switching activity in a surgical hospital is a complex and demanding task requiring inspired and energetic leadership of a high order. The team rose magnificently to the occasion and supported the local and wider community at this time of crisis and they rightly deserve the Wealden Hero Award."
