Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, is delighted that a grant will be awarded to Farleys House & Gallery as part of the Government’s Cultural Recovery Fund for Heritage.
The Cultural Recovery Fund is funded by the Government and delivered by the Historic England and the National Lottery Heritage Fund to support local and national heritage treasures that have been impacted by the pandemic.
433 organisations will receive a share of £67 million from the Culture Recovery Fund for Heritage to help restart vital repair and maintenance work on cherished heritage sites, to keep venues open and to save jobs and livelihoods. An additional 12 organisations will receive £34 million from the Heritage Stimulus Fund to restart construction and maintenance.
Farleys House & Gallery is based in Muddles Green, near Chiddingly. It is the Sussex home of two 20th century surrealist artists Lee Miller and Roland Penrose, and it was a meeting place for some of the leading figures from the world of 20th century modern art. Pablo Picasso stayed in 1950, and many others have visited. Farleys House documents Surrealism and modern art, and works by many British and overseas artists are displayed in the house in a selection that regularly changes as items are loaned to exhibitions in galleries around the world. The Bluebell Railway, which recently celebrated its 60th birthday and part of which runs through Wealden constituency, and the Sussex Archaeological Society, which runs Michelham Priory near Hailsham, are also successful recipients of grants from the Cultural Recovery Fund.
Nus Ghani said: “I have long campaigned to secure more Government funding for Wealden and I am delighted that this grant will help Wealden’s heritage sites to ensure they continue to thrive post-pandemic. Farleys House & Gallery is a real cultural gem for art lovers and historians, and I am pleased that the Bluebell Railway and the Sussex Archaeological Society will also be awarded Government funding. It is essential that we preserve our heritage, celebrate Wealden’s history, and protect local jobs and local economy. There is more to be done to support Wealden through the pandemic and I will continue to campaign for more funding for the constituency.”
