Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, has welcomed new scheme launched by the Government to support victims of domestic abuse.
From 14th January, victims of domestic abuse will be able to access support from local pharmacies in Wealden as part of the “Ask for ANI” scheme.
The scheme will allow those at risk or suffering from abuse in the local area to discreetly use a recognised codeword to signal that they need help and access to support.
Pharmacies across Wealden and the rest of the UK are classed as essential retailers and remain open, meaning specifically trained staff are available to provide a safe space for victims to sound an alarm if they are isolated at home with their abuser, and unable to get help in another way.
The scheme will be available in local Boots stores, as well as a number of local independent pharmacies which will display a poster in the window, with more detailed information about the “Ask for ANI” scheme available online. There will also be an on-going sign-up process for all Wealden pharmacies that want to take part.
Support services across Sussex are still accessible for all victims during lockdown and there are many ways in which people can discreetly reach out for the help and support they need. The Portal is a partnership of leading domestic and sexual abuse and violence charities in Sussex and can be contacted at 0300 323 9985. You can also call the 24hr National Domestic Abuse Helpline at 0808 2000 247.
If you or someone else is in immediate danger, always dial 999 and ask for the police.
Nus Ghani said: “It is a sad but inescapable truth that domestic violence is a horrific reality for thousands of people, both women and men, around the UK in 21st century Britain. Lockdown restrictions are especially difficult for those experiencing domestic abuse. Please remember that you are permitted to leave your home if you feel unsafe and in danger. I am pleased that we can go further in Wealden to offer contact in public places and the ‘Ask for ANI’ scheme allows those suffering from abuse to discreetly signal that they need help. Wealden pharmacies already play an incredibly important role in our local community, and their support is vital in ensuring that domestic abuse victims get the help that they need during this challenging time. Please reach out if you need help.”
