Wealden MP Nus Ghani has met with a group of farmers from Wealden, organised by the National Farmers Union (NFU)’s East Sussex County Chairman, Chris Jeffries, to discuss issues concerning farming and agriculture.
Five local farmers from across Wealden, including Crowborough, Mayfield and Wadhurst, attended the meeting alongside representatives from the NFU. With expertise in a wide variety of farming areas in attendance, Nus was able to discuss the issues that matter most to farmers in East Sussex.
The availability of reliable and fast broadband, the cost of food production and the Government’s plans for a new Livestock Information Service, which will allow farmers to have more accurate information about the movements of their livestock, were all discussed at length.
They also discussed what more can be done to ensure that the environment around Wealden is healthy and clean, to further encourage farming and attract more tourism. This included concerns around the improper use of footpaths and fly-tipping, a issue across the county as littering and rubbish can cause serious environmental damage and major problems for farmers.
Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, said: “It was great to continue working with some of the farmers in Wealden who do so much for our local economy and community.
“With so many diverse farmers across Wealden, farming has an extra level of importance for countryside management, food production, food security and supporting local jobs.
“Having served as the Parliamentary Liaison for the Conservative Rural Affairs Group, I fully understand how important it is that Wealden farmers have their voices heard in Westminster and I will continue to campaign alongside and on behalf of our local farming community.”
