Nus Ghani has nominated four local pub chefs for the Parliamentary Pub Chef of the Year Award.
In conjunction with Uckfield FM, Nus invited local people to contact her with the details of their favourite local pub chefs. Almost one hundred people got in touch with recommendations via email, telephone, Facebook, Twitter and through Uckfield FM.
The four pubs that received the largest number of recommendations were:
- The Highlands Inn – Uckfield – chef: Harry Merrett
- The Laughing Fish – Isfield – chefs: Henry Brookes & Richard Harvey
- The Hare & Hounds – Framfield – chef: Annie Saunders
- The Griffin Inn – Fletching – chef: Ben West
As such, Nus has nominated the head chefs at these pubs for the Parliamentary Pub Chef of the Year Award. The prestigious award is run by the British Beer & Pub Association and the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group, in partnership with Nestle Professional. The winners will be announced early in 2018, having been selected by a panel of expert judges.
Over 1 billion meals are sold in pubs across the UK every year. This award is a wonderful way to recognise the hard work and passion of pub chefs. Pubs are not only integral to community life across Wealden but also contribute significantly to the economy. Each year this industry invests £2.5m into the local economy and provides 1,422 local jobs in Wealden, many of which go to young people.
Commenting on the nominations, Ms Ghani said: “I wish all of the pubs in Wealden the best of luck in the competition. I know that each of these chefs is innovative in the kitchen and the standard of some of the meals I have tried is incredibly high.
I am proud to support local publicans, chefs and pub staff who do a great job in keeping Wealden’s pubs going. Pubs are the social heart of many of our villages and the best way to support them is by visiting them to eat and drink locally.
Pubs contribute a huge amount to Wealden. Not only does the pub industry provide 1,422 local jobs, but pubs also help to tackle isolation and loneliness by providing much needed venues for people to meet and for local events.
I look forward to visiting each of them in the New Year in order to congratulate them on their achievement (as well as to enjoy their fantastic food!).”
