MAYFACS Shed

Nusrat Ghani, MP for Wealden, has visited Mayfield to attend the Grand Opening Fête held in celebration of a new Community Shed.

A Grand Opening Fête was held in Mayfield last Sunday to allow people to view the Shed and its facilities and learn about other projects. MAYFACS is a community charitable organization which stands for Mayfield & Five Ashes Community Services, with a main objective to help alleviate loneliness and isolation by providing a range of activities.

MAYFACS manager, Shirley Holland was awarded the Wealden Hero Award last summer for her fantastic work mobilising a group of volunteers to support the elderly and vulnerable in the area throughout the pandemic.

The Shed is just one of MAYFACS' community projects, bringing together people of all ages to meet, share skills to repair or upcycle items and attend workshops for other craft activities. The MAYFACS Shed has been in development throughout the lockdown, and after considerable effort by project manager Ian Bruce and a team of volunteers, a redundant farm building has been extensively renovated, and is now ready to open and accept members.

Nusrat Ghani said: “The MAYFACS Shed is a fantastic asset to Mayfield communities and it was a pleasure to witness its opening at the Grand Opening fête. It is a great new place for people to come together, share their skills, learn new skills and chat with other shedders over a cuppa. The project manager Ian Bruce has done a great job and I hope that the community can now enjoy a wide range of new activities and workshops. I’m working closely with the Men’s Shed team in Groombridge and helping to raise funds for a similar project, so I hope that Wealden will soon gain another great facility.”
