Wealden residents are encouraged to help in clearing litter that blights the area during the Great British Spring Clean 2024.

This year’s campaign will run from 15-31 March, and will bring together individuals, community organisations, businesses and councils to make a difference to the environment on our doorstep.

Keep Britain Tidy was founded by the Women’s Institute members in 1954 and marks its platinum anniversary this year. People are being encouraged to make a #PlatinumPledge to mark Keep Britain Tidy’s 70th year such as by picking 70 items, 70 bags, or spending 70 minutes in the great outdoors litter-picking.

In partnership with Biffa, Wealden District Council will be supporting volunteers in their litter picking efforts during the Great British Spring Clean 2024 by supplying of equipment and collecting of the bags of litter.

Keep Britain Tidy reported that in 2023, 96% of participants agreed that they felt they had made a difference to their local area. 84% of participants agreed that the campaign helped them to feel inspired to do more to protect the environment.

Keep Britain Tidy also has the Great British Spring Clean Awards to officially recognise and reward litter picking volunteers and partners. There are 6 categories to nominate within, including for businesses, local organisers and schools. Deadline for entries close on 31st May 2024, find out more here.

Nusrat Ghani said: “Keep Britain Tidy has been galvanising the nation for 70 years to ensure we have a healthy and clean environment for the benefit of all. Wealden is one of the most beautiful parts of the UK, and I will continue to work to ensure we protect and maintain this for generations to come. I’m grateful to all the individuals and groups of volunteers who help keep our streets, waterways and natural habitats clean, and I hope this year more are inspired to make a #PlatinumPledge for our Wealden countryside.”
