Anti-littering campaign

Nusrat Ghani, MP for Wealden, is supporting a new campaign to help tackle littering in Wealden.

“Do the right thing!” is a campaign launched by Wealden District Council to help address the noticeable increase in litter across the district and highlight how costly littering is to the taxpayer, the environment, and local wildlife. Littering in Wealden contributes to £1m a year the Council spends providing street cleaning services. As part of this campaign, additional new general waste and dog waste bins will be installed across the area.

Looking after the environment is one of Nusrat’s top priorities. She works closely with the Ashdown Forest Conservators, the Ashdown Forest Rangers and the CEO of the Ashdown Forest on ways how to prevent littering and dog fouling in the Forest and she has previously volunteered with Brighter Crowborough group who help pick up litter and help keep Wealden clean.

Following concerns raised by constituents, Nusrat has also recently met with representatives from Highways England to discuss increased volumes of litter alongside Wealden's A roads. Nusrat was pleased to learn that Highways England are working the Council and a multi-agency response is underway to prevent people from throwing rubbish from their cars.

Nusrat Ghani said: “Wealden countryside is one of the most beautiful parts of the UK and I will continue working with all organisations involved to ensure that we pass on a healthy and clean environment to our children. I am grateful to all the volunteers who dedicate their free time in order to pick up litter and help keep our streets, woodlands and waterways clean. I will continue to work with Wealden District Council and East Sussex County Council on ways to keep Wealden clean. I urge everyone who visits our beautiful countryside, from Wealden or further afield, to do the right thing and make sure to bin their rubbish, or take it home if unable to find a bin nearby.”
