Nus Ghani hosted an event in partnership with Uckfield Chamber of Commerce, and sponsored by the Department of Work and Pensions’ Disability Confident programme, aimed at getting more disabled people in Wealden and East Sussex into work.
The Disability Confident event was attended by over 40 businesses, who were interested in learning more about how they can hire more disabled people.
Amanda Wadsworth MBE from the Department of Work and Pensions spoke about the work they are doing to get more disabled people into work, and how businesses can better prepare for hiring disabled people.
There are 5.7 million disabled people of working age, and events like Nus’ Disability Confident event are designed to show businesses how they can do their bit to ensure that they see the ability, not the disability, when recruiting for new roles.
Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, said: “I enjoyed hosting and speaking at the Disability Confident event, encouraging businesses in Wealden and East Sussex to become more confident in hiring disabled people.
“It’s critical that anybody who wants to find work is able to do so. Disability Confident is about challenging the social prejudices that exist against employees with disability.
“By working with the Government and local businesses, we can make real, lasting societal change and get more disabled people into work than ever before.”
Ian Noble, from Uckfield Chamber of Commerce, said: “We were thrilled with the good number of Uckfield businesses, many of whom are Chamber members, who attended the event.
“Understanding the importance of inclusion of people that have disabilities, within the local workplace, is essential and we have been pleased to help local businesses become more ‘Disability Confident’.”
