The Bridge Cottage Heritage Centre in Uckfield are hosting an ‘Equaliteas’ event on Monday 25th June, from 3pm until 5pm.
Equaliteas is a tea party being held my groups and institutions across the country to celebrate 90 years since the passage of the Representation of the People (Equal Franchise) Act, which granted equal voting rights to men and women over the age of 21.
The tea party at Bridge Cottage is about sharing stories, creating debate and encouraging people to think about democracy.
Wealden MP Nus Ghani, the first female MP for the area, has worked with Bridge Cottage to celebrate women’s suffrage over the last few months, including events at Bridge Cottage as part of a fortnight long exhibition charting the history of Wealden suffragettes and suffragists.
Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, said: “I worked with the fabulous team at Bridge Cottage to mark the centenary of women getting the vote for the first time, but this year also marks 90 years since women and men gained equal voting rights.
“It’s great to see Bridge Cottage putting on an Equaliteas tea party, giving people from across Wealden a chance to share their stories and discuss the big issues of the day, and encouraging more people to be involved in our democracy.
“If you are interested in attending, make sure to email [email protected] to reserve your place on what will be a very enjoyable afternoon.”
