Uckfield High Street has been nominated for the Great British High Street of the Year award by Uckfield Chamber of Commerce, supported by Wealden MP Nus Ghani.
The Great British High Street of the Year award is run by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, and aims to celebrate the local achievements and contributions Wealden high streets make to their communities.
Uckfield High Street has been nominated for the “Rising Star” category, which recognises ambitious and creative high streets, on the basis of Uckfield High Street’s Late Night Christmas Shopping event, a popular and successful community collaboration.
Nominations will be judged on leadership, impact, innovation and community engagement, with shortlisted finalists invited to an event in London in November.
Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, said: “I am delighted that Uckfield Chamber of Commerce have nominated Uckfield High Street for the High Street of the Year award.
“I have worked with the Uckfield Chamber many times before, and their support for Uckfield’s fantastic local businesses goes so far to making Uckfield High Street what it is.
“As the Great British High Street awards progress, I look forward to continuing to work with Uckfield Chamber of Commerce and everyone involved with Uckfield High Street to make sure they go as far as possible in the awards.”
Ian Noble, Uckfield Chamber of Commerce Secretary, said: “There’s no doubt that Uckfield enjoys a strong sense of ‘community’, not least at Christmas in the shape of the annual Late-Night Christmas Shopping evening.
“The evening has become a traditional fixture in our town’s calendar and few other communities will enjoy such occasions, which is why we felt it important for this to be recognised by entry into the Great British High Street of the Year competition.”
