Championing Maritime and Supporting our seafarers

INTRODUCTION

As a former Minister for Maritime, I remain deeply committed to the sector. During my time as a Minister, I oversaw the launch of our Maritime 2050 strategy, launched the Women in Maritime Pledge, landed the world’s first Transport and Accessibility programme, and secured significant funding for the Maritime and Me campaign. As a Minister for the Year of Engineering, I ensured that Government focussed on young girls, especially those from deprived backgrounds, making sure they were encouraged to consider careers in rail, road, aviation and maritime. We exceeded our goal and reached over a million young people. As the pandemic spread across the globe, I called for all seafarers to be vaccinated and treated as essential workers.

I also launched Maritime Safety Week in 2019, which focuses on a number of different elements of safety on the water, including fishing vessel safety. I am fortunate to be a Trustee of the wonderful Seafarers' Charity, and as a Fellow of the influential think tank Policy Exchange, I have published a report championing the sector and suggesting policy.
