Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, has welcomed funding for Wealden families as part of the Government’s Covid Winter Grant Scheme.
In November, the Government announced a significant package of extra financial support targeted for those in need over the winter period. This includes the £170 million COVID Winter Grant Scheme, which will be running until the end of March 2021.
As part of this package, East Sussex County Council has received financial support of more than £1.5 million to support households across East Sussex who are struggling to make ends meet during the pandemic. Funding will be allocated to those already receiving support and to organisations that provide support for those in need.
Around £900,000 will be used to fund initiatives including food vouchers during the Christmas holidays and February half term for vulnerable children in Early Years settings and pupils eligible for Free School Meals, small grants to families within the Troubled Families and Rethinking Families Programme, and support for vulnerable families and young people being supported by Children’s Services.
The funding will also enable the council to award grants ranging from £3,000 to £100,000 to a number of voluntary, community and social enterprise organisations across the county so they can continue their vital work helping their communities during this challenging time.
Nus Ghani said: “I appreciate the toll that the pandemic has taken on our everyday life and I am aware that many Wealden families are struggling. I am pleased that East Sussex County Council has received a generous package as part of the Government funding to ensure that individuals who are experiencing financial hardship are supported throughout this winter.”
