Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, is delighted that sixteen Wealden organisations have received grants as part of the £750 million Government support package for charities.

Sixteen charities in Wealden have received funding from the £200m Coronavirus Community Support Fund, totalling £237,956. The funding is aimed at supporting those who need to continue providing their services as part of the national coronavirus response.

Recipients of the grant are:

  • ENGage
  • The Sussex Association For Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus
  • East Sussex Association of Blind and Partially Sighted People
  • Children’s Respite Trust
  • Hailsham Festival of Arts & Culture
  • Mayfield & Five Ashes Community Services (MAFACS)
  • Mediation +
  • Outward Housing
  • Singing Mamas Choir CIC
  • The KEYS Project
  • Uckfield Volunteer Centre
  • Rites for Girls CIC
  • The Sandcastle Trust
  • Rotherfield St Martin
  • Eastbourne Bird Aid CIO
  • The Bowles Rocks Trust Ltd

Wealden’s charities ENGage, Rotherfield St Martin and Mayfield & Five Ashes Community Services (MAYFACS) are among the recipients. Nus met representatives of these charities, Wendy Coleman (ENGage), Morag Hockin (Rotherfield St Martin) and Shirley Holland (MAYFACS), in the summer and presented them with the Wealden Hero Award.

The main purpose of ENGage is to provide a day service for people with dementia. Wendy is the manager of TN22 Plus Club based in Hadlow Down, which runs personalised activities and offers companionship for people living in rural Wealden.

Rotherfield St Martin also helps to combat isolation and loneliness by offering support and a daily programme of activities. During the spring lockdown, Morag has fundraised a fantastic £3,000 for the charity.

MAYFACS offers a variety of information, guidance, activities and services to local people of all ages and needs. Shirley is the project manager of MAYFACS and this year, she mobilised a group of volunteers to provide a network of services and ever-ready assistance to the whole community.

Nus Ghani said: “Our charities are playing a crucial role in our communities, supporting those who are most in need. In a year of unprecedented disruption, we have relied upon our charities more than ever. It is fantastic news that so many of our local charities have received this valuable funding and I am delighted that ENGage, Rotherfield St Martin and MAYFACS are amongst them. It has been a pleasure meeting Wendy, Morag and Shirley this summer and thank them for their hard work as individuals to support our local charities.”
