Children at three local primary schools have decorated over 800 moths that have come together for one amazing installation at the Crowborough Community Centre.
The display at Crowborough Community Centre has been co-ordinated by the community group ‘Sustainable Living in Crowborough’. The initiation is part of the global ‘Moths to a Flame’ project to coincide with the recent COP26 summit of world leaders in Glasgow.
The wonderful children of Fermor, Ashdown and St John’s have been working hard throughout COP26. This creative process has provoked thinking and discussion about how we can all make a difference.
Karen Patient from Sir Henry Fermor CE Primary School said:
It is vital that children are aware of how to care for their world and that their concerns are listened to. The Moths to a Flame project provided the opportunity for Sir Henry Fermor to be involved in our local community alongside other schools. At school, the children learned about COP26, where decisions were being made that will affect the future of our children’s world. The teachers discovered, through age-appropriate discussion, that the children could talk passionately and with hope of a future healthy world.
This project has inspired our Eco team to think creatively about how we can make small changes at home, school and together as a community in Crowborough.

The installation aimed to highlight our troubled relationship with fossil fuels. In the same way moths are drawn to a flame, humans are drawn to fossil fuels because of the benefits they provide, but fossil fuels are also deadly for our planet (in the same way a flame is to a moth). Moths coming together also represents what we can achieve when we work together.
The display was visited by Wealden MP Nus Ghani. She said:
Each of us has a part to play in ensuring that we pass on a healthy and clean environment to our children. We need commitment from individuals locally and this is a great initiative that engages our young generation in creative conversation about our relationship with nature and environment.
