Nusrat Ghani, MP for Wealden, has met with the Network Rail Regional Managing Director for the Southern Region John Halsall, to discuss current and future rail projects in Wealden.
Wealden train stations have recently undergone several works as part of upgrades to accessibility and reliability of local rail services. In October last year, the embankments at each end of the Wadhurst rail tunnel were re-enforced to prevent landslides and delays on the line. Key orientation features such as warning tactile will also be installed on all Kent route stations this year, which include Wadhurst and Frant stations.
The biggest Wealden projects currently underway are the step-free access improvements to Eridge and Crowborough train stations. The existing staircases and bridge at Eridge station were removed and replaced with a new, modern footbridge, as well as a new lift shaft, accessible ramp at the station entrance and upgrades to the waiting room. The construction of similar step-free access upgrades at Crowborough station is expected to be completed in the autumn.
Nusrat Ghani said: “I’m pleased to have met with Network Rail to discuss the progress of the works at Eridge and Crowborough train stations as well as future projects in Wealden. I'm pleased to have secured these vital upgrades and I’m very much looking forward to opening the improved and step-free Eridge station next month. Train travel is a key form of transport for Wealden residents and securing improvements to rail services in Wealden remains one of my priorities. I have repeatedly raised the need of a major investment into the electrification of the Uckfield Line with my Ministerial colleagues, and I will continue this quest.”
