Nusrat Ghani, MP for Wealden, has welcomed the announcement that The Sussex Archaeological Society has been awarded nearly £200,000 from the Culture Recovery Fund.
The Sussex Archaeological Society, one of the UK’s oldest archaeological and historical societies, runs several historic sites across Sussex, including Michelham Priory near Hailsham. The Society has been awarded £191,400 to support them to keep local history alive and to care for our irreplaceable heritage.
Sussex Archaeological Society has benefitted from the first round of funding announced in October 2020. This grant is part of the final emergency support package from the government’s Culture Recovery Fund, delivered by Historic England and the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Nusrat Ghani said: “Heritage sites such as Michelham Priory are the bedrock of Wealden’s tourism industry. The Culture Recovery Fund has provided a vital financial lifeline to many cultural venues and heritage sites across Wealden and East Sussex and I am delighted that Sussex Archaeological Society is receiving further support to open up its amazing historical sites to more visitors and help them thrive post-pandemic.”
