Nusrat Ghani, MP for Wealden, joined the MAYFACS Community Open Morning to meet its Trustees, celebrate local volunteers and hear about all the activities taking place in Mayfield and Five Ashes.
MAYFACS is community-based support service for the residents of Mayfield and Five Ashes and the surrounding area, offering a variety of information, guidance, activities and services to local people of all ages and needs, including baby & toddler club, cinema club and poetry club. On Saturday 19th November, an Open Morning was held to thank its supporters and volunteers for all the fantastic work they continue to do to support local communities.
Nusrat has been working closely with MAYFACS over the past few years. In 2020, she awarded its previous Manager Shirley Holland with the Wealden Hero Award for her leadership throughout the pandemic, and in 2021 Nusrat opened the MAYFACS Shed, which is a fantastic project bringing together people of all ages to meet, share skills to repair or upcycle items and attend workshops for other craft activities.
Over the past year, Nusrat has been in close collaboration with the current management team Lucy Jarvis and Freya Huxtable, on providing support to Ukrainian families arriving to the area via the superb Ukrainian Support Hub on Mayfield High Street, which was visited by the Refugees Minister in August.
Nusrat Ghani said: “Volunteers are at the heart of community-led support across Wealden, and MAYFACS is a shining example of our fantastic community organisations. I am incredibly grateful for all the vital work that MAYFACS volunteers continued to do throughout the pandemic and beyond, having stepped in again to support Ukrainian families arriving to Wealden this year. A huge thank you to all the extraordinary volunteers including Lucy Jervis, Freya Huxtable and Caroline Quill, who has been working tirelessly to coordinate and unite local hosts with Ukrainian guests. I look forward to continuing working with MAYFACS on future projects in Mayfield.”
