During her time in Government, Nusrat Ghani MP had the privilege as a Minister for Industry, Ukraine Reconstruction and as Foreign Office Minister to work with remarkable Ukrainian Mayors, Ministers, and businesses as the UK helped build back local infrastructure in a war zone as well as ensure our trading relationship continued to support the Ukraine economy. As the Sanctions Minister she did what she could to ensure that the UK applied the sanctions regime appropriately and took to task countries who failed to abide by the sanctions regime helped the Russian economy. Around 3k+ individuals, entities and ships are sanctioned. Russias overall energy revenues have decreased by around 24% between 2025 and 2024. UK, US and EU sanctions have denied Russia access to at least $540bn over the past few years, one could argue that’s around 2 years funding for the invasion.
At the end of March Nusrat visited Ukraine on the invitation of the Speaker of the Ukraine Parliament and President Zelenskyy to commemorate the atrocities at Bucha and sign, with allies, a joint statement on Bucha and Ukraine.
Bucha is a city in Kyiv Oblast with a population of 37,000. The Bucha Summit has taken place each year since 2022 to commemorate its liberation and to honour the victims of the brutal Russian war crime which took place and are continuing in Ukraine.
On 27 February 2022, over a 33-day period Russian troops entered Bucha, killing over 500 residents, damaging and destroying over 3000 homes. Residents were used as human shields, children were kidnapped and families were destroyed. On 31 March 2022, Bucha was liberated and the brutality of Russian troops was exposed. At the Summit Nusrat heard raw and brave testimonies from women who have witnessed war crimes – summary executions, torture and enforced disappearances.
Nusrat was honoured to join President Zelenskyy at the Summit alongside Speakers and Heads of Delegations of Parliaments from across Europe, reaffirming our commitment to striving for a secure and free Ukraine.
Ukraine sees the UK as one of their closest and most trusted partners, further enhanced by the One Hundred Year Partnership. The UK has committed up to £21.8billion in total for Ukraine and will support Ukraine’s ability to defend itself against Russian aggression and that Ukraine’s future is in NATO.
Four years on from Russia’s full-scale invasion our commitment to Ukraine remains absolutely clear. Ukraine’s security is our security.
